For grown-ups
What little ai lab is
little ai lab is a free web app for children aged 4 to 13. Short lessons explain what AI is, what it can do, how it learns and where children meet it. Then My Lab lets them build and keep small AI projects of their own.
There are three age bands: 4 to 6, 7 to 9 and 10 to 13. Every screen works for all of them. The youngest band never needs reading: everything can be read aloud, and children only tap and drag.
What it keeps, and where
Everything is kept on this device, in this browser, and nowhere else:
- Age band and course choice (localStorage)
- Lesson progress and stars (localStorage)
- The read-aloud setting (localStorage)
- Light or dark look (localStorage)
- Pip's tips, tutorials finished and the tap sound setting (localStorage)
- My Lab projects (IndexedDB)
Nothing is sent anywhere. There are no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no trackers. The app never uses the camera or the microphone, and never asks for photos or uploads. Children only work with pictures, stickers and puzzles the app provides.
How read-aloud works
Read-aloud uses the voice built into this device. It never uses an online voice, so the words are spoken right here, and nothing is recorded or sent. How the voice sounds depends on the device, and if a device has no built-in voice for the page language, the listen buttons simply do not appear.
If Pip stays silent, add a voice: on an Android tablet open Settings, then Accessibility (or General management), then Text-to-speech, and install an English voice; on an iPad open Settings, then Accessibility, then Spoken Content, then Voices. The youngest children rely on it, so it is worth the minute it takes.
Settings
Children can change their age band, the course length, read-aloud and tap sounds from the age button at the top of every screen. Settings can also play Pip's welcome again or show the project tutorials again.
About the AI lessons
The lessons aim to build curiosity and healthy scepticism: AI is made by people, it can be wrong, and it is always worth checking what it says and asking a grown-up. A chat about what your child has tried is the best part of any lesson.
Install on this device
Put little ai lab on the home screen like any other app. It then opens like any other app, with no browser bars, and once it has loaded the lessons and your child's projects work without the internet. It is still the same free web app: nothing extra is installed or sent anywhere.
Chrome on Android
- Open little ai lab in Chrome.
- Tap the menu (the three dots at the top right).
- Tap Add to home screen, or Install app.
- Tap Install, then Add.
Safari on iPad or iPhone
- Open little ai lab in Safari.
- Tap the Share button (a square with an arrow).
- Tap Add to Home Screen.
- Tap Add.
Clearing everything
You can delete everything little ai lab has saved on this device in one step. Afterwards the app is exactly as it was on the very first visit.
